Colliers Park
Wrexham
The Project
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) Colliers Park is a £5M state-of-the-art National Football Centre. Dedicated to the beautiful game both locally and nationally, it’s now a centre of excellence with two dedicated partners at its heart – the FAW and Wrexham Glyndwr University.
Collaboration is key
Built within an area steeped in mining and football history, FAW Colliers Park had to meet the needs of three distinct groups. These included FAW elite footballers, university students based at the site studying Sports Science, and the local community who are able to book and use the 3G pitch. To ensure the project met the needs and expectations of all three users, close collaboration was essential.
Maximising resources
With half the budget already allocated to international-standard hybrid grass and 3G pitches, we needed to make existing facilities work harder.
To make this happen, materials were kept simple, low maintenance and robust, using a limited pallet based upon the FAW colours of red, green and white.
In addition to external facilities, the project also provided lecture and conference facilities, a dedicated player zone, administrative offices, changing rooms, fitness suites, video analysis rooms and medical facilities.
The completed project now provides a dynamic range of community benefits. For example, students are given the opportunity to join the Centre of Excellence staff team and provide additional support for coaching and match analysis, giving them valuable practical experience.
