Penrhyn Church in Wales VC School
Pembrokeshire
The project
Lawray was appointed to design and deliver a 21st century school on the Pembrokeshire coast. As well as creating a new 120-place primary school for 4 to 11-year-olds, the school needed to include a 20-place nursery and have the flexibility to accommodate out-of-hours community use.
Early budget costs
The contractor was tasked with preparing a fully compliant tender and design solution with cost certainty at the bid stage. It was therefore essential that the design team supported the contractors to develop a design to RIBA Stage 2 so they could obtain budget costs at an early stage.
Rated ‘Excellent’
The new school building included seven classrooms, a quiet room, library, multi-purpose hall, kitchen, cloakrooms, offices and a staff room. Externally, the scheme included hard and soft play areas, a new MUGA, grassed sports pitch and habitat areas. Plus, it had to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’.
WRW Construction even went on to use the scheme as a demonstration project for Construction Excellences Zero Waste Initiative. By minimising waste at the design stage, we made sure real waste was at an absolute minimum during the build.
