Atlantic College

Vale of Glamorgan

The project

UWC Atlantic is the founding college of a global education movement and international residential school located in the 12th century St Donta’s Castle. Lawray was approached to support the client in developing an initial concept design for a new sports hall and associated facilities at the College.

Wealth of facilities

The solution would need to cater for 250 students and provide four badminton courts, a basketball court, a five-a-side pitch, dance studio, gymnasium, changing facilities and a commercial kitchen and cafeteria. The Sports Hall would need to follow the Sport England facility guidelines and achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’.

Protecting the environment

In keeping with its historic surroundings, and to avoid having any harmful effect on the existing buildings and estate, the preferred location was the site of a former maintenance yard. Taking every action to avoid harming the environment, the scheme was successfully constructed under the watchful eye of an archaeologist, ecologist, arboriculturist, acoustician and BREEAM assessor.
