Old College
Aberystwyth
The project
Architecturally distinctive and historically significant, Old College is the birthplace of the University of Wales. Lawray was commissioned as architects to transform this iconic building into a vibrant cultural and creative centre for Wales.
143 rooms
The Grade I Listed building and adjacent Grade II listed villas are being transformed from an underused teaching facility into an exhibition centre, place of learning and discovery, as well as a hub for creative business start-ups. What’s more, the new cultural centre will be supported with a boutique hotel, conference facilities, wedding and event spaces. The redevelopment will provide spaces across seven floors and 143 rooms, including 10 rooms with capacity ranging from 60 up to 200 people.
Innovative new entrance
A new public entrance and atrium will be created by constructing an extension to the rear of the Georgian Grade II Listed Marine villas adjacent to the Old College. A dramatic triple height foyer and entrance will create a sense of arrival and provide access to the main spaces across seven floors of the Old College. As well as a visitor welcome centre and shop there’ll be a first-floor glass fronted restaurant and bar with dramatic sea views. Offices and volunteer restrooms complete the offering on the second floor.
