Y Ffwrnes Cultural Centre
Lawray was commissioned by Carmarthenshire County Council to realise their vision for a new cultural hub in the heart of Llanelli. The centre comprises a 500-seat main theatre alongside rehearsal spaces and a studio, bringing together the town’s rich industrial heritage with a contemporary setting for cultural events.

Y Ffwrnes Cultural Centre was conceived as a modern expression of Llanelli’s tin-making legacy, while providing a welcoming and relevant venue for art, performance, and drama. Central to the brief was the creation of a strong sense of connection and ownership within the local community, ensuring the building would be both accessible and widely embraced.
Inspired by the past
The design draws directly on the area’s industrial history, while responding carefully to the diverse functions of a modern theatre. Y Ffwrnes translates as “the furnace,” a powerful symbol of heat, energy, and transformation. This idea, combined with the social and cultural narratives shaped by Llanelli’s industrial past, formed the creative foundation for the building.
Externally, zinc cladding evokes the outer casing of a furnace, giving the building a robust and distinctive presence. Internally, the main auditorium features a palette of reds, oranges, and yellows, representing the fire at the heart of the centre. The project also sensitively incorporates the existing chapel and Sunday School buildings, reinforcing continuity with the town’s architectural and social heritage.
