75 Portland Place is a carefully executed refurbishment of a Grade II* listed Georgian townhouse, combining heritage conservation with modern living. The project demonstrates Lawray’s sensitive approach to upgrading historically significant homes while preserving their architectural integrity and character.
Refurbishment Scope & Modern Upgrades
Lawray worked with a private client to refurbish and modernise their Grade II* listed family home at 75 Portland Place. The project included upgrading building services, installing bespoke marble-finished bedrooms and bathrooms, remodelling the kitchen wing with a basement media room, adding underfloor heating and new floor finishes, and undertaking structural repairs and extensive plaster restoration throughout.
Design Approach & Heritage Sensitivity
Throughout the project, Lawray worked closely with the client and contractor to preserve the house’s architectural and structural integrity while introducing subtle improvements for contemporary family living. The work demonstrates a careful approach to heritage properties, balancing conservation with modern comfort.
Historical Significance & Architectural Legacy
75 Portland Place is a late-Georgian townhouse with an Adam neo-classical façade, built c.1776–1790, likely developed by James Adam and his brothers. Subsequent alterations by John Nash’s developments and 19th-century extensions, including a mansard addition by master builder Stanley Bird, have contributed to its layered history. Notable Adam-style interiors, particularly in the piano nobile, were retained and conserved, while Lawray’s interventions ensure the house functions seamlessly as a modern family home.
