Hope Street
A dilapidated former retail store in the centre of Wrexham has been transformed into the Hope Street Church, an inclusive community and faith centre for the Diocese of St Asaph.
A contemporary interpretation of a faith and community building for the 21st Century, our brief was to create a welcoming, safe and unique venue to host community focused events that are open to all.
Working together
Following a successful competitive interview, Lawray worked closely with the Diocese and the Church Revitalisation Trust (CRT) to repurpose the building. The shared ambition was for the project to act as a catalyst for wider town-centre regeneration, breathing new life into this prominent location.
An engaging space
The transformation of a tired, underused corner unit into a smart, stylish and highly visible community centre has delivered an uplifting and flexible space, much valued by the client. Active street frontages invite the public inside, drawing the community into the ground-floor coffee shop and multi-functional spaces.
The first floor accommodates counselling rooms and administrative offices, while the top floor houses a generous faith and function space capable of welcoming congregations of up to 180 people.
By sensitively stripping back layers of historic retail fittings and introducing new mechanical and electrical services expressed at high level, the design achieves a bold yet restrained industrial aesthetic, one that supports both community use and contemporary worship.
