The Market
Comprising a vibrant mix of business and retail units, alongside food outlets and bars, this lively community market operates throughout the day and into the evening. Located at the heart of Caerphilly between the railway station and Caerphilly Castle, the container-style development provides a distinctive destination for both locals and visitors.
Commissioned by Lancer Scott, Lawray coordinated the contractor-designed elements from RIBA Stage 5. The bespoke, custom-designed containers accommodate twenty-eight commercial units, offering flexible space for a diverse range of food, beverage, retail and commercial operators.
The market takes its name, Ffos, the Welsh word for “moat,” from its proximity to Caerphilly Castle.
Sustainability & delivery
Sustainability was a key driver of the scheme, with green roof systems, photovoltaic panels, rain gardens and permeable paving incorporated to minimise environmental impact.
Lawray worked closely with the Principal Contractor and specialist sub-contractors to coordinate the contractor-designed elements. The project architects’ RIBA Stage 5 design intent drawings were reviewed, with additional drawings produced by Lawray to facilitate detailed design coordination and on-site installation.
