Deeside Fire Station
Making buildings work as efficiently and effectively as possible is a key approach at Lawray. So when we were asked to help create the very first tri-service emergency facility in North Wales, we were determined to make it work perfectly for all stakeholders.
Retain and reuse
Always with a keen eye on sustainability and re-use, we thoroughly assessed the viability of the existing building. Having determined that the existing and tired 1960s station could still be retained and reused, rather than demolished and rebuilt, we helped undertake a £2M remodelling of the facility.
To ensure the fire and rescue service could remain in operation throughout the works, we decanted their team into temporary accommodation while extensive remodelling work could be done.
After demolishing and rebuilding the Fire Training House, as well as extending, re-cladding and extensively refurbishing the existing station, Deeside now boasts a facility fit for a 21stcentury fire and rescue service.
Leading the way
The scheme was an area pathfinder in bringing together the fire and rescue services along with the ambulance services. It was developed following detailed consultation with NWFRS operational and technical support staff as well as the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust. Together, with community groups, both services occupy part of the completed scheme.
