Creative Hub, Old Library
Lawray Architects led the transformation of Wrexham’s Grade II listed Old Library into a vibrant Creative Hub, successfully handing the completed building over in 2025. The £4 million refurbishment has brought a disused civic landmark back into active use, creating a new cultural and creative destination in the heart of the city centre.
Heritage Conservation
The project carefully balanced heritage conservation with contemporary intervention. Original architectural features were retained and restored, while modern upgrades introduced improved accessibility, enhanced thermal performance and energy-efficient building systems. A striking new glass extension provides a light-filled community café, strengthening the building’s connection to Queens Square and encouraging public engagement.
Community Impact
Delivered with Welsh Government Transforming Towns funding, the Creative Hub supports the growth of Wrexham’s creative economy and contributes to the city’s wider regeneration ambitions, including its UK City of Culture 2029 bid. The completed scheme now offers flexible workspace for creative professionals, learning opportunities through partnerships with Coleg Cambria and Wrexham University, and an inclusive public venue for the local community.
Collaboration
Delivered in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council, WSP, Crookes Walker Consulting Limited, SP Projects Limited, JPS Civil & Structural Design, and Read Construction Holdings Ltd, the Old Library Creative Hub is a strong example of Lawray Architects’ approach to heritage-led regeneration, sustainable reuse and placemaking, generating long-term social, cultural and economic benefits for Wrexham.
