Cardiff Ambulance Station
The reuse of a two 1970s steel framed buildings in Avenue Industrial Park in Pontprennau has provided a sustainable new home for Cardiff Ambulance Station.
Reusing assets
Tasked with retrofitting the buildings, Lawray started with space planning to design a solution that made the best use of space. Once housing offices, the walls of the existing building at the front of the site were retained with a new second floor and a mezzanine added to create a new feature atrium at the entrance. This is now home to modern offices, meeting facilities, administration areas, lockers and a mess room.
Improving operational efficiency
A portal frame building to the rear of the site was stripped back to its steel frame and fitted out to house the Make Ready Depot. This enables a dedicated team to clean and restock vehicles freeing frontline crews to respond quickly to emergencies. The building also houses a gym for staff and a cycle response unit. The project is on course to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
