Aberystwyth fire station
When Aberystwyth needed a new fire station, our overall objective was to enhance efficiency and improve the environment for everyone. What we achieved was something built to BREEAM Excellent standards – and classed as ‘exemplar’ by Construction Excellence in Wales.
Built for the job
While planning constraints were limited, there was one potential issue. As the town was susceptible to major storm surge flooding, this placed strong importance on the materials being used. While the garage and mess facilities needed to be as robust as possible, a more lightweight construction could be used elsewhere.
With that in mind, the method of construction we chose struck a balance between speed and robustness. As a result, our 54-week programme came in right on time thanks to careful contractor selection and a sound set of construction details.
Almost zero waste
Classed as ‘exemplar’ by Construction Excellence in Wales, the project diverted 99.4% to landfill during both its demolition and construction stages.
Now the fully inclusive design ensures the station is a true community hub. Thanks to its inviting design, it’s now a working building where members of the public are invited to drop in and discuss the fire safety issues that are important to them.
