Ben’s Journey: Redefining the Apprenticeship Path

Ben’s journey from Automotive Design to Architectural Technology highlights the power of talent, determination and alternative pathways into the profession.

Every career starts somewhere, but not every journey follows a traditional route. Ben’s story is a great example of how talent, curiosity and determination can open doors in unexpected ways.

When Ben joined Lawray Architects, he brought with him a degree in Automotive Design from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David rather than a conventional architectural background. While there was no recognised apprenticeship route in Architectural Design and Technology (ADT) that matched his experience, we saw the
potential in his technical skills, problem-solving ability and thoughtful approach to design.

Working alongside Cardiff Metropolitan University, we helped develop a bespoke apprenticeship pathway tailored specifically to Ben. Following a rigorous assessment of his academic achievements and core competencies, we created a new role that would allow him to build on his existing strengths while developing the specialist knowledge needed for a career in architectural technology. It was an innovative approach, and one that has proved its value through Ben’s progress.

From the outset, Ben demonstrated an impressive ability to transfer his existing skills into a completely new discipline. His understanding of technical drawing, precision and design has enabled him to contribute confidently across a range of projects, often grasping complex concepts more quickly than would typically be expected at this stage of a career. Combined with his enthusiasm, professionalism and willingness to embrace new challenges, he has become a valued member of the team.

One project in particular has shaped Ben’s development: the restoration and redevelopment of Old College in Aberystwyth. As one of Wales’ most significant Grade I listed buildings, the project demands exceptional care, technical understanding and respect for its historic fabric. Under the mentorship of Senior Associate Lyn Hopkins, Ben has gained invaluable experience in conservation architecture, producing detailed technical drawings, learning heritage-specific methodologies and working alongside consultants to develop sensitive, contextually appropriate solutions.

What stands out most is Ben’s approach to learning. He asks thoughtful questions, listens carefully and is always looking for opportunities to expand his knowledge. Whether working on technical detailing, supporting project delivery across different RIBA stages or contributing to discussions with clients and consultants, he approaches every task with quiet confidence and a genuine commitment to delivering the best possible outcome.

Today, Ben contributes to projects across conservation, education and blue-light sectors, having recently completed his BSc (Hons) in Architectural Design and Technology with First Class Honours. His achievement is a testament to the commitment and determination he has shown throughout his apprenticeship, while his journey demonstrates the value of creating alternative pathways into the profession and the fresh perspectives they can bring.

At Lawray Architects, we believe investing in people is just as important as investing in projects. Ben’s story is one we’re proud to have helped shape, and we’re excited to see where his career will take him next.
