Designing
With Purpose
Wrexham’s historic General and Butchers’ Markets have been revitalised through a £4.5m heritage renewal by Lawray Architects for Wrexham County Borough Council. Completed in December, the project restores two city landmarks—removing unsympathetic additions, reinstating lost features, and blending Victorian character with modern sustainability.
Designed for today’s traders and tomorrow’s entrepreneurs, the scheme introduces new lifts, entrances, WiFi, and ventilation, alongside flexible layouts and reopened upper floors that boost Wrexham’s night-time economy. Shortlisted for the 2023 Planning Awards, it exemplifies how conservation and innovation can renew a city’s civic heart.
Brighton Theatre Royal

Excellence
The Grade II* listed Theatre Royal Brighton has undergone a major façade restoration. Lawray, appointed by Conamar Construction, designed the full replacement of the 19th-century terracotta colonnade, with over 100 pieces recast using traditional methods and fixed to a new steel frame. Completed in July 2024, the project also refurbished the Colonnade bar, entrances, and Royal Circle toilets, restoring the theatre’s splendour while safeguarding its heritage.
Visitor Centre, Lisvane & Llanishen Reservoirs

Communities
Just outside Cardiff, Lisvane and Llanishen Reservoirs have been transformed into a hub for leisure, learning, and wellbeing. Delivered with BECT Building Contractors, the new visitor centre provides modern facilities while respecting the site’s heritage and natural character. Sustainability was central, with solar panels, green gas heating, and energy-efficient systems. Now part of Welsh Water’s Adventures portfolio, the project unites recreation, conservation, and community.
